You are asked to hydraulically design an aquifer pumping test using MAGNET in an unconfined aquifer consisting of outwash sand similar to that on Cape Cod.  A short term production test of the well gave a specific capacity of 40 gpm/ft and the aquifer is about 75 ft thick.  The maximum capacity of the available pumping equipment is 800 gpm.  Observation wells are available at 100 and 300 feet from the pumping well.  The purposes of the test are to evaluate the hydraulic anisotropy of the aquifer and to determine transmissivity values and specific yield which can be used to predict the effect of long term production from this well.

Your design should include specific recommendations of pumping rate, test duration, and any other factors which you consider to be important.

Hint: A quick estimate of transmissivity for design purposes can be obtained from specific capacity

MAGNET/Modeling Hints:

  • Use 'Synthetic Mode' to set up your flow model ( 'Other Tools' > 'Utilities' > 'Go to Synthetic Case Area').
  • Conceptualize the model as 1-layer, unconfined aquifer.
  • Use the given input data parameterize your flow model.
